PUBLIC SAFETY CENTER
Police Officers and civilian employees of the Edmond Police Department have found themselves in a tight spot after years of growing as a Department to meet the needs of a growing city. The tight spot is due to the fact that they have outgrown just about every area of the Police Station.
The current site of Police Headquarters is a renovated City hall with a 2nd floor addition. The Police Department moved into this building in 1980 when Edmonds population was 34,600 and there were only 49 sworn Police Officers.
Currently, Edmond has a population of 85,000 and there are 116 sworn Officers. A recent ICMA (International City/ County Managers Association) assessment of the Department found the Edmond Police Department to be one of the best Police Departments assessed, with one major deficit, the facility.
The space currently utilized by the Department to carry on daily business is inadequate and outdated in both size and efficiency. The holding cells have not changed since 1980. The holding facility is not safe for prisoners, as well as Officers and Jailers.
The Public Safety Dispatch Center (911 Call Center) and Emergency Management are in the same situation. These employees are housed in a basement under the courthouse in cramped conditions that often flood during storms. The Dispatch Center/Emergency Operations Center, because it is located in the basement of the Council Chambers, cannot be expanded.
The New Public Safety Center will house the Police Department, Public Safety Dispatch and Emergency Management Emergency Operations Center. Learn more here - WWW.OCTOBER11.ORG
From the ENA President:
Say "Yes" "Yes" Oct 11th for the PSC
The City of Edmond was recently named No. 1 out of 10 Perfect Suburbs in America by CNBC. It was determined that Edmond has the best mix of affordable housing, good schools and low crime.
Among other facts, they found us to be 71% safer than any other community in the U.S.
Since I have worked in Edmond real estate for 15 years, I know first hand that people move here for the schools, great neighborhoods and our low crime rate.
The ENA Board supports the funding and construction of the new Public Safety Center, as proposed by the city council. We encourage you to study the ballot questions, ask questions and vote on Tues, Oct 11th.
If you have never toured our present facility, please arrange to do so. Tours are being conducted on Fridays at 9am and 1pm.
Please plan to join us at the Annual Neighborhood Picnic Thursday Oct 6th at Mitch Park (6-8pm). You can learn more about the Public Safety Center Vote.
After considering these questions, we hope you will join the ENA board, support this initiative and do your part and vote to keep Edmond a "Safe Place to Live."
Tonya Coffman, ENA President
